A pool deck has to do three things at once: stay cool underfoot in August, shed water away from the pool, and look like it belongs with the rest of the house. We have poured pool decks in Lakeway for nearly 20 years and we know what works.
Pool deck finishes we install
- Kool-deck — the classic spray-on texture that stays 20–30°F cooler than broom concrete, available in dozens of colors
- Knockdown texture — a troweled acrylic or concrete texture, similar feel to Kool-deck with a wider range of patterns
- Stamped and colored — ashlar slate, flagstone, or travertine patterns in cool earth tones
- Exposed aggregate — naturally cool, very slip-resistant, and works well with modern homes
- Broom finish with a sealed border — the most affordable option, looks sharp with a contrasting stamped band
How we build a pool deck
Subgrade and drainage. Pool decks are unforgiving — water that doesn’t drain back into the pool or away from the foundation becomes a problem quickly. We compact the subgrade, lay a 4-inch limestone base, and shoot grades to drain toward the pool or a perimeter drain.
Pour and finish. We pour at 4 inches minimum, with #3 rebar on 18-inch centers. For raised decks or attached spas, we step to 5 or 6 inches. We use a 3500 PSI mix with a mid-range water reducer for a denser, less permeable slab.
Slip resistance. A broom finish, exposed aggregate, Kool-deck, or knockdown all exceed ADA slip-resistance standards. A smooth trowel pool deck will be slick when wet — we won’t do them.
Expansion joints. Pool decks expand and contract more than any other slab on the property. We install 1/2-inch expansion joints filled with self-leveling polyurethane at the pool coping, the house foundation, and any existing structures. We re-seal these every 2–3 years.
Pool deck pricing in the Lakeway area
Pool deck pricing varies more than almost any other concrete work because of the finish type and the access (most pools are in fenced back yards with limited equipment access).
- Broom finish: $11–$14 per sq ft
- Exposed aggregate: $13–$17 per sq ft
- Kool-deck or knockdown: $13–$18 per sq ft
- Stamped and colored: $17–$24 per sq ft
A typical 600 sq ft pool deck with a broom finish and a contrasting stamped border lands in the $7,200 to $9,000 range. Full stamped and colored decks run $11,000 to $15,000+.
Resurfacing an existing pool deck
If your existing pool deck is structurally sound but cosmetically tired — fading, spalling, hairline cracks, or a color you no longer love — we can resurface it with a new acrylic or stamped overlay. This typically runs $6–$10 per square foot and is a great option if the original deck was well-built but the finish has reached the end of its life.
We will tell you on the first visit whether resurfacing is a smart option or whether the deck needs to come out.
Pool deck add-ons
- Replacement of the pool coping (the bond beam cap)
- Skimmer upgrades and pool light niches
- Plumbing sleeves for future water features
- Footings for pergolas, cabanas, and shade structures
- Integration with a stamped patio, walkways, or retaining walls
