A well-placed walkway does more than get you from the driveway to the front door. It pulls the landscape together, makes the property navigable after dark, and adds measurable value at resale.
Sidewalk and walkway types
- Straight-run sidewalks — the standard 3 to 4-foot public-sidewalk replacement
- Curved garden paths — broom finish or exposed aggregate, with broom-finished borders
- Stepping stone look — poured in place with seeded aggregate between stamped squares
- ADA-compliant ramps and walks — 1:12 slope maximum, proper landings, detectable warning surfaces at crossings
- Driveway-to-street connectors — engineered for city right-of-way, including culvert work if needed
How we design a walkway
We start with the path of least resistance — literally. Most people take the same line across a lawn whether a path exists or not. We watch for that line, then route the walkway to match it.
Width. 3 feet is the minimum for a single person. 4 feet allows two people to walk side by side. For ADA, 36 inches of clear width is required, with 60-inch passing zones every 200 feet.
Slope. Cross-slope should not exceed 1/4 inch per foot (2%). For runs along a slope, we step the walkway with low risers (under 4 inches) and treads at least 36 inches deep.
Drainage. Water on a walkway is a slip hazard. We shoot grades to drain away from structures and toward planted areas or a French drain.
Joints. Control joints every 4 to 6 feet (closer than a driveway because walkways are narrower and more prone to random cracking). We use expansion joints where the walkway meets a foundation, driveway, or existing slab.
Walkway finishes
- Broom finish — practical, the most common, slip-resistant
- Exposed aggregate — a pebbled look, very popular in the Hill Country
- Stamped and colored — see our stamped concrete page for patterns and pricing
- Salt finish — rock salt broadcast and washed for a fine texture, works around pools
Walkway pricing in Lakeway TX
A standard 3-foot broom-finish walkway runs $8–$11 per square foot installed. A 4-foot stamped walkway with a single-color ashlar pattern runs $15–$20 per square foot.
A typical 50-foot front walkway (3 feet wide, 150 sq ft) lands in the $1,200 to $1,650 range for broom finish.
Public sidewalk and right-of-way work
If you need a sidewalk replaced in a public right-of-way (most common after the city flags a trip hazard or a tree root has lifted a section), we handle the entire process:
- Permit pull with the city
- Coordination with utility locates
- Removal and disposal of the old section
- New pour to current ADA and city standards
- Final inspection
We have replaced sidewalks in Lakeway, Bee Cave, West Lake Hills, and Lago Vista. We know what each city’s inspector is going to look for.
Walkways are small jobs we love doing. Send us a photo and the rough length and we will turn around a quote the same week.
